Innovation and Prevention
This area of research explores the issue of preventing loss of autonomy and assesses the effectiveness of innovations (e.g., technological, organizational, etc.) targeting older adults and their caregivers.
We attempt to shed light on several key issues, particularly those relating to the savings that can be made by preventing frailty and autonomy loss, methods and models in Economics for evaluating innovations, the value of care provided to seniors, projections for elderly care spending, etc.

Some questions to guide this area of research
- What is the link between unmet care needs and the risk of falls among older adults?
- How effective is research on multicomponent interventions (e.g., physical activity, nutrition programs) on the onset of physical frailty in the over 70s?
- How can we measure the value of innovations (digital therapy, smart watches, mobile apps for clinical monitoring, etc.)?
- What preferences do older adults and caregivers have regarding new technologies designed to prevent or manage loss of independence?
- What is the economic value of these innovations?
Methodologies and data sources
We employ several methodologies and data sources to help answer these questions, including:
- qualitative methods using data collected via semi-structured face-to-face interviews with older adults and caregivers to identify their main concerns regarding long-term care;
- quantitative methods using data collected via a questionnaire transmitted in France and several other EU countries, the United Kingdom, and the United States. We are in the process of developing the Aging UP! survey, which will provide insights into the preferences of older adults and their caregivers;
- data derived from a survey on French nursing homes conducted by the French Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (DREES);
- data from the European Survey on Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe; and
- data from clinical trials assessing different aspects of health.
